Located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the Victoria and Albert Museum is the world’s largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts and design. Founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert the museum houses a permanent collection of over 2.7million exhibits over 145 galleries. Since 2001 the museum has embarked on a major £150m renovation programmed.
The Covid 19 pandemic caused the V&A museum to rethink its staff accommodation, and architects DMA designs were commissioned to develop a solution in the form of a complete overhaul of 420sqm in the southeast corner of the basement. MCD Heritage were the main contractor for the works which saw them complete several complex tasks including structural alterations and modifications to points of access and egress, and high-end joinery providing bespoke furniture and storage. As well as adaptations of life safety systems, new ceilings and floorings and a staff fit out area including lockers.
MCD Heritage delivered this complex project in the height of Covid-19 government restrictions, addressing potential supply chain issues early to ensure deadlines were met. The team completed the works completely self-sufficiently, utilising their own skilled work force made up of Carpenters, Painters and Multi traders and subsequently completing the project without relying on sub-contractors.
MCD Heritage have remained a trusted contractor of choice for the V&A to date and over the last three years they have supported the museum in several large-scale projects including additional toilet refurbishment and exhibition builds.
