What did the V&A require?

The V&A required a partnering contractor to help implement an interactive space for the redesigned Silver Discovery Area.

What did we do?

MCD Heritage are proud to have been the chosen t-out contractor for the redesigned Silver Discovery Area at the V&A which has just opened. Designed by David Sudlow Designers with Simon Leach Design, the interactive area retells the history of silver. Through reorganising existing space within the museum, the new space explores what silver is and how objects are made from silver. The area contains a number of interactive exhibits including historical recordings to listen to, stencils to draw around and a workshop space where visitors have to nd certain objects hidden on shelves.

We worked alongside the museum and designers to make the space a reality. The work included building new thick solid oak work tops and a central, solid, oiled hardwood unit for all the stencils to sit on. Additionally, a series of showcase units were built with toughened glass shelves to house the historical articles.

We individually created each stencil and mounted these horizontally on the worktops. As part of the space build, a new upholstered furniture piece was also added with low-level seating for small children with an L-shaped seat housing inset audio. We ensured audio was triggered through use of a touch-pad held on a bracket above the armrest. We also organised a contractor to survey the site once the existing exhibition was removed to produce a set of site drawings. These drawings were then used to create a full set of working drawings of exhibits including setting out information.

Results

The end result was a fantastic balance of objects, hands-on activity and written information, presented in an accessible way using a variety of media. The work was finished within time and budget and MCD Heritage were excited and proud to have been involved in contributing to reviving the memory of one of our favourite (but lesser used!) materials, silver.
